JBL Flip 5 Bluetooth Speaker Review

Everyone likes to enjoy the outdoors a little differently, doing activities like hiking, camping, running, skating, or lounging by a pool or lake.

And though not everyone agrees on what outdoor activities are best, everyone can agree that adding music makes any activity all the sweeter.

No matter what your taste in tunes, the ability to bring music with you anywhere you go and share it with others is one of the greatest things about modern technology, so why not take advantage of it on your next outdoor adventure?

One way to do that is with an excellent quality, great sounding, and attractive looking wireless speaker.

While there are lots of options out there, let’s have a look at the JBL flip 5 Bluetooth speaker as a possible contender for your choice in quality music portability.

JBL Flip 5 Review

Founded by American audio engineer, James Bollough Lansing, JBL has been in the business of providing excellent audio experiences since 1946 when they played a major role in the film industry’s transition from silent movies to “talkies” (films with sound).

Since then, JBL equipment has been a staple of sound around the world gracing theaters, studios, stages, and homes with the highest of sound quality.

It’s been noted that the introduction of JBL technology to the UK ultimately in the ’60s even had a major influence on the music of the Beatles!

Considering their longevity and stellar reputation, it is no surprise that this innovative company has also mastered the art of wireless technology and made it possible for consumers to enjoy their favorite music on the go.

The Flip 5 is the latest model in the legendary company’s popular series of waterproof Bluetooth speakers.

First made available in 2019 on the heels of its popular predecessor, the Flip 4, the JBL Flip 5 brings some interesting changes to the design.

The Flip 5 looks very similar to the Flip 4. Both share the same cylindrical dimensions and pleasing texture, but there are some fundamental differences that have stimulated lively discussion among reviewers.

There is no disagreement that the Flip 5 has a great design. Weighing in at 540 grams, it’s so lightweight and small that it slips easily into a backpack or a cupholder. The interactive playback buttons are built into the rubber like fabric, giving you a satisfying tactile experience while handling this speaker.

And with 11 colors to choose from, you’re sure to find a favorite hue that expresses your unique style. If you want to want to up your individualized game, JBL even offers customization!

For an additional $30, you choose from numerous patterns, colors, and prints to design your own JBL speaker cover. You can even add your name for the ultimate personalized touch.

This option to personalize it also makes the Flip 5 a great gift idea for music-loving friends and family.

JBL Flip 5 is Seriously Rugged and Durable

This speaker comes with a carrying case and there’s also a sturdy, integrated handle and string for carrying it on your wrist.

When navigating tricky terrain, you can easily slip a standard-size carabiner over the speakers recessed handle and clip it to a beltloop or backpack.

Now you’re hiking in style, listening to your playlist with no worries.

The JBL Flip 5 rugged construction and durability ensures a consistent listening experience no matter what the conditions. Even if you’re into water sports, you won’t have to worry about damaging your speaker!

Thanks to the IPX7 rating of the fabric coating, this speaker can withstand being submerged in three feet of water for up to 30 minutes!

This is great because unlike its comparable competitor, the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2, the JBL Flip 5 does not float.

But when placed in shallow water, exposed passive radiators on either end of the speaker cause the water to jump around to the beat, which keeps the water from penetrating the speaker, and it looks really cool.

If you want to expand your level of sound, the JBL Flip 5 offers a PartyBoost function. Just press the PartyBoost button to pair with multiple compatible speakers, and you’ve multiplied the music exponentially, which is great for larger and more lively outdoor gatherings.

Flip 4 vs Flip 5

While the Flip 5 is a great speaker, some of the changes JBL made to the design have left some reviewers scratching their heads and asking why. Let’s take a deeper look at some of the differences between the Flip 4 and Flip 5.

If you were to remove the outer shell of the JBL Flip 5, you may be surprised to find the speaker is a single 20-watt transducer.

While not an unusual feature in and of itself, the question lies in why JBL chose to abandon the dual 40mm transducer design that drove the Flip 4 which changed the listening experience from stereo to mono.

The company also, in some reviewers’ opinions, neglected to upgrade the Bluetooth feature from 4.2 to 5.0 capability. Although not a major flaw, there may be syncing issues with such platforms as Youtube or Bitchute. Netflix, however, streams through the Flip 5 with no issues or delay.

And if you want to use the Flip 5 to answer your phone, you’re out of luck because there’s no microphone feature. You won’t be able to charge your phone either, as the USB port is for in-charging only. (You can though with JBL’s slightly-higher-priced Charge 4).

Speaking of ports, JBL also decided to leave out the 3.5mm input for wired headphones making the speaker’s functionality entirely dependent on Bluetooth.

While certain features and functions vary between the JB speaker models, we can agree that what’s most important when shopping for a speaker is, of course, the quality of sound. As always in this department, JBL delivers the goods.

JBL Flip 5 is Still Fantastic

Unlike other companies, JBL has always maintained a standard of quality that has not diminished over the years.

The JBL Flip 5 is designed for outdoor use, so powerful volume is just as important as good sound equalization. Most reviewers commend the Flip 5 for striking just the right balance between loudness and clarity.

Despite the single transducer, the Flip 5 puts out crystal clear highs, impressively emphasized mids, and nice booming lows that come to life at around 100 Hz.

When held up to similarly priced speakers such as the Sony xB22, the BÖHM Impact Plus, or the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom, all averaging around $99, the JBL Flip 5 comes out on top thanks to its undeniably superior sound.

How long will the JBL Flip 5 hold a charge? The Flip 5 rocks a replaceable metal lithium battery and the specs claim a 12-hour span of constant play between charges.

Reviewers have reported that number is closer to 8 ½ hours of continuous play at medium volume before needing a charge, which is not too bad.

The time it takes to charge the Flip 5 from zero to full comes in at around 2 ½ hours, beating out The EU Wonderboom charge time of more than 5 hours.

The Flip 5 also boasts a good solid range of connectivity, up to about 100 feet from the source before the signal begins to deteriorate.

This distance may vary depending on obstacles such as walls and corners when being used indoors. But if you’re hanging out in the great, wide-open outdoors, the signal performance is true to the claim.

Final Thoughts:

So get ready for whatever outdoor activities may beckon you.

Whether you’re hosting a pool party or camping with friends, you’ll want your summer soundtrack to sound its best.

True to JBL tradition, the Flip 5 combines great looks, great quality and exceptional sound resulting in a very fine, sturdy outdoor speaker.

Great quality speakers that go wherever you do are an absolute must.

Look no further than the JBL Flip 5 and you won’t be disappointed. In fact, you’ll be thrilled.
